my little baby bowling ball :)

So Wednesday, is baby clinic day , or as I keep calling it, weigh-in day.
(curse you daytime tv - too much biggest loser!! :P)

I think it's a bit of an odd practice really - for a couple of hours a week, a local church hall gets turned into a little baby cattle market - bring 'em in, strip 'em off, plop 'em on the scales! It's lucky we can't remember it all as adults - can you imagine how many of us would be in therapy for the shame & embarassment?!

Anyway!
It was our second visit (because of the little 'un's weight loss problems early on, we had more home visits than usual), and completely different to the first. Last week, the pile of red books was huge & we waited quite a while, today - in & out in 10 minutes!
And, I'm pleased to say, the little dude is now weighing in at 9lb 2oz - making him officially slightly heavier than the girlie 10 pin bowling ball I use when we visit the local lane :D (you wondered where I was going with the post title, didn't you?!)

That said though, he's currently snoozing next to me, rocking a rather funky stripey tee that's allegedly for babies up to 7.5lb. go figure.
baby clothes sizing properly baffles me. and i can't even blame one particular company - I have 'tiny baby' clothes from boots, mothercare, next & h&m kids - all for up to 7.5lbs, all of which my 9lb 2oz bowling ball baby still fits very comfortably into.

definitely going to have his daddy's build. which is all well & good, but by the time he fits into all the gorgeous 0-3 month summer stuff i bought when he was still a bump, it'll be nearly Christmas! :P

anyone else had this problem? or any reccomendations of where to buy for beanpole babies?!

  1. Sorry to hear about Dylan's weight-loss problems early on. I went through that with my eldest. Great news that he's piling on the pounds now :-)
Re clothes, sizing seems pretty random. For my beanpole I always stretch vests and babygros lengthways after washing, buy adjustable trousers (with elastic and buttons inside) and as for the summer clothes, well you'll probably have the heating on so he'll be fine. Has anyone knitted you any cardigans? I love babies in knitwear! x

    Hi there!
I did have the same problem with my first son (and still have now that he is 2!). I used to do the same as Sandy regarding trousers and bought the elasticated ones. Regarding vests they were always too big sideways and right length ways. I did find that the French brands were just perfect, especially the brand petit bateau or absorba were brilliant. You can buy them at http://www.vertbaudet.co.uk/maternity-childrens/Bodysuits.aspx?CategoryId=3621&&Path=3621/3623&&ChmCatId=3623. They wash and keep like a dream. All of the ones I had I reused for my second one, even if I do not have that problem with him, he is much chunkier than his brother. It is the same general rules with all the French clothes (I am French by the way) and I noticed that their sizing system is completely different from the Uk one. A 0 to 3 months in France is a 1 month in the UK.
    Hope that helps :)

  3. I agree sizing can be really random. Adams comes up really small I find, as does Gap, but some Asda and Tesco stuff comes up really big! 10mth old baby is still in some 3-6 and 6-9 in their clothes!

Sandy - yes, we had a really horrible scary 2nd week back in hospital - not fun - SO glad all seems to be as it should be now!
and yes, Darren's mum went on a bit of a knitting mission as soon as we told her she was going to be a nanny, so we'll be able to layer up :)

perfectly happy mum - thank you for that link, they have some lovely stuff! (may not be quite so grateful when i get my visa bill! :P)

clarey - i'm glad i'm not the only one who thinks so! ah well, guess it means I'll get my money's worth out of everything!

  6. Yikes re: weight. Can imagine how you might be feeling about it as my DC1 had problems gaining.

With clothing I tend to go by the length measurements (50, 56, 62, 68, 74, 80) as far easier to move between brands and such. Separates last longer. Debenhams to excellent adjustable trousers and you may find that they fit as cropped trousers next year!

My DC2 is in clothing DC1 was in at 1 year. He is 3 months! Nothing prepared me for the shock of a big baby after the effort of every last ounce for the first.
